Music – The river of hope

Music, The perennial source of resplendent happiness is a palliative when one is depressed. There have been times where one had to delineate music as an art or as a talent. It is an empire ruled by the deft fingers of a maestro. Now a possible question one might propound is music a placebo or an art. Then again merely stating it’s functioning as the former or the latter, doesn’t obviate the need of expressing its role as the other. As opposed to any other field of study, polemical views of music stem out from its own admirers J now is that a credit? Yes and no. Let s not get deep into it.

My mind vacillates in describing the nature of music. I conducted a poll and asked my friends to grade Music on a scale of ten based on its influence on their life. I educed that those who were the elite of the music community gave a rating of 5-6.Surpisingly, those who were enthralled by its liveliness and yet were green horns in music, graded it to a greater value. It s not that those tyros generally dislike the “technical” part of music but polemical views argue that Music shares a better relationship with the mind than the deft fingersJ.

What exactly does this mean? Psychologists who really treat the emotionally challenged never gainsay the fact that music is not only an art, but takes a dual role in turbulent times and times of emotional disturbances. “The strong minded “as I term them are those who survive a mental depression. They graded it a 8-9 on 10.The relation between adroitness and influence is now seeming weird aint it J

How does one explain this behavior? Just as in any case the easiest way is to disperse the argument as one stemming from the whimsical mind of men. Of course gender has an equal part to play in this too and there is never gainsaying the fact that women are bent more towards bland music. Women are known for their caprice yet they give their honest opinion when it comes to music. Men and women never bifurcate in their views in music. In most of the cases only music had been the axle around which love revolves.

Coming back to what we were discussing” what makes music to be graded better by the strong minded?” This brings us to a perfect definition of something called a “placebo”. There are lots of reasons why I like English for and the main one being its metaphorical phrases. Such a metaphor here is a placebo. Let’s say one has a malignant tumor or say some disease for which a cure has not yet been found. Now doctors’ prognosis will not only be based on the medicine and health condition of the patient but also on “the extent to which the fact that the disease could be cured is seeped into the patient”. To put things in a nutshell, the patients perception of the disease and their grade on its curability adds are important factors when prognosis is considered.

When doctors need to know his influence and that of the patient s perception on prognosis, they take to a placebo. It’s generally a practice that they fill a tablet with sugar syrup and claim it as a cure for some disease. This is done not to sell it as a nostrum but to test what percent of the cure is purely psychological. After the intake, they trace out the psychological part of the patients. This sugar syrup used as a medicine or as a tool for tracing out the psychological effects is termed a “placebo”.

Music in most cases music is listened to a greater extent, in times of depression than at times of bliss. This brings us to very important point of considering the psychological effects of music. How often does one forget himself in a song that’s his favorite number?

No medical explanations have yet been proposed on this but this does give us a valid point. How effective is music as a cathartic?  Listening to a favorite number is not a problem solver by any yardstick .But the tranquility your mind experiences on listening to the song actually gives u a feeling that your miseries are mitigated. Now this is where music plays the role of a placebo.

Paltering is never of interest to me. The fact that is educed here is that , the psychological effects of music overrides even the deepest grief. The greatest asset to ones life is music. I have to admit that anything technical in music  appears Greek and Latin to me . But still am one among those passionate listeners enthralled by its cadence. It has been the Brahmasthra in my quiver J Every rhythmic beat that flows through my ears , rejuvenates my senses. Critics’ arguments are centered around the point that music belongs to only those who play it not hear it. The very idea is to take it to heart J That’s where the life of music is and that s exactly where musicians and listeners have interests that are coterminous.

There is not going to be revulsion in my feelings but  lets shift to something else  along the same lines .The guy who actually inspired me to write this , is the owner of an enthralling voice  who renditions music like none other. My effusive way of narration will have given an inkling of suspicion on the person. Without any more surprises, I will end all your conjectures J it s my favorite Hariharan. Affectionately called Hariji. He has succeeded in mollifying me in times of anger and in delivering music that was my palliative in times of depression. I have had numerous friends and rarely few, hold membership for the non-Hariharan fans community.

Coming back to music role as a placebo, not many results are available to bolster my words . My experiences have made me shower doxologies to  music. The more I enjoy , the more I write :)
